Tāhuhu
Aroha ki te tangata, ahakoa ko wai, ahakoa nō hea. Give your love to people, no matter who they are, no matter where they're from.
The Tāhuhu is the central beam in the wharenui. This one is decorated by Ngā Tai Aroha. They are all female forms symbolising the strength and courage of all the women of the tribe who promoted and maintained the values of the people.
Kōwhaiwhai: Waioratanga
Ka hoki te waiora ki te ao. Health will return to the world.
The patterns on the side are called kōwhaiwhai. This one represents Waioratanga. This one has a modern design, and represents the well-being and good health. It also reminds us that our good health depends on the health of the whole natural environment.

Kōwhaiwhai: Mauri
Ko tēnei mea ko te mauri, hei pupuri i te hau o te kāinga. This is the mauri, holding the essence of home.
Mauri describes the life force, or essence, of all people and things, living and non-living.

Kōwhaiwhai: Whakakitenga (top)
Tohua ngā whakatipuranga ki te inu i te puna o te mātauranga kia hora ai te whakaruruhau o te ora ki runga o te iwi. Nurture the growth that will drink from the well of knowledge, so the wise will spread well-being to the tribe.
This contemporary design is based on the stingray, often seen in the waters of Hongoeka. See a photo here.
It represents the never ending search by people for total understanding and knowledge of the universe.
Kōwhaiwhai: Manaakitanga (bottom)
Tangata takahi manuhiri, he marae purehu. When the guests trample the floor, the dust will rise over the marae
This pattern represents the obligation of the people of the marae to receive and treat their guests well, as if they were members of the whānau (family) during their stay.

Kōwhaiwhai: Wairuatanga (top)
Mate atu he tete kura, ara mai tete kura. A waving philosophy dies away, a waving philosophy rises to us. (Really not sure for this one :/)
This pattern represents the spiritual dimension linking people together. The thoughts and action of people gathered at the marae will contribute to the overall wairua (spirit) of the marae.
Kōwhaiwhai: Tūrangawaewae (top)
Hokia ki ngā maunga kia purea koe e ngā hau o Tāwhirimatea. Return to the mountains, to get purified by the winds of Tāwhirimatea.
This pattern is the "place of standing" of the Hongoeka marae, its symbol. It includes the horoeka, or lancewood, which abunds in the hills around the marae. Hongoeka is thought to come from the word "horoeka".

Kōwhaiwhai: Mana Atua, Mana Whenua, Mana Tangata (top left)
Toi te kupu, toi te mana, toi te whenua. The word is art, the mana is the source, the earth is the origins (but there are lots of ways to interpret this)
This is the motif found all around the marae, which combines leaves (mana whenua), the faces of people as they hongi (mana tangata), or the face of a god (mana atua). It also incorporates the colours of past, present and future.
Kōwhaiwhai: Whanaungatanga (bottom right)
E hara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini.
This pattern celebrates the strength of the ties that bond people of a same kinship, from the past and coming in the future.
